Shani Sade Sati: What the 7½-Year Saturn Period Really Means
Few words worry people as much as "Sade Sati". Yet it is simply the time Saturn (Shani) takes to pass through the part of the sky around your Moon sign, and it comes to everyone two or three times in a lifetime. Knowing how it works takes much of the fear out of it.
How Sade Sati is worked out
Sade Sati is counted from your Moon sign (rashi), not your Sun sign or your Lagna. It begins when Saturn enters the sign before your Moon sign and ends when Saturn leaves the sign after it. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so the three signs take about seven and a half years, which is what sade sati means.
Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go round the zodiac, so Sade Sati returns roughly every 30 years.
The three phases
- Rising phase (Saturn in the 12th from the Moon): expenses, travel, disturbed sleep, and a feeling that effort is not yet being rewarded.
- Peak phase (Saturn over the Moon sign): the most intense part. Mental pressure and heavier responsibilities, health that needs care, and deep maturity.
- Setting phase (Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon): attention moves to money, family and speech, and the pressure slowly eases.
It is not always bad
Saturn rewards discipline, patience and honest work, and many people build stable, lasting success during Sade Sati. How it plays out depends on the whole chart:
- For Vrishabha (Taurus) and Tula (Libra) ascendants, Saturn is the yoga-giving planet (yogakaraka).
- A strong, well-placed natal Saturn usually gives a milder period.
- The running Mahadasha and Antardasha matter as much as the transit.
Shani Dhaiya
Saturn's passage through the 4th or the 8th sign from the Moon lasts about two and a half years and is called Shani Dhaiya (or Kantak Shani). It is treated as a smaller cousin of Sade Sati.
Who is under Sade Sati in 2026?
Saturn entered Meena (Pisces) on 29 March 2025 and stays there until it moves into Mesha (Aries) in 2027. Until then:
- Sade Sati runs for Kumbha (Aquarius, setting phase), Meena (Pisces, peak phase) and Mesha (Aries, rising phase).
- Shani Dhaiya runs for Simha (Leo, Saturn 8th from the Moon) and Dhanu (Sagittarius, Saturn 4th from the Moon).

Traditional remedies
- Chant the Shani mantra "Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah", or the Hanuman Chalisa, especially on Saturdays.
- Light a mustard-oil lamp under a peepal tree on Saturday evenings.
- Donate black sesame, mustard oil, black cloth or iron to people in need.
- Serve elders, workers and people with disabilities: Saturn is pleased by humility and service.
- Keep routines, avoid shortcuts and keep your word. This is the remedy Saturn values most.
