Mangal Dosha (Manglik Dosha): Meaning, Cancellation and Remedies
Mangal Dosha, also called Manglik Dosha or Kuja Dosha, is one of the most talked-about factors in Vedic astrology, especially when families match kundlis for marriage. It is also one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains what it is, how it is checked, and why a "Manglik" label on its own is never the full story.
What is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal (Mars) is the planet of energy, courage, drive and conflict. A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in one of these houses, counted from the Lagna (ascendant):
- 1st house: self and temperament
- 2nd house: family and speech (counted mainly in South Indian practice)
- 4th house: home and domestic peace
- 7th house: marriage and partnership
- 8th house: longevity and sudden events
- 12th house: comforts, expenses and losses
Many astrologers also check the same houses counted from the Moon and from Venus. Mars in these places is said to bring its fiery nature into married life: arguments, impatience, a wish to dominate, or delays in marriage.
How common is it?
Very common. Five or six of the twelve houses count, so roughly 40 to 50 percent of all charts are Manglik by the basic rule from the Lagna alone, and more if the Moon and Venus are checked too. A Manglik chart is not rare, and not a reason for alarm.
When is Mangal Dosha cancelled?
Astrologers list many conditions under which the dosha is cancelled (Mangal Dosha bhanga) or becomes mild. Some widely used ones:
- Both partners are Manglik. The two doshas are considered to balance each other, which is why Manglik status is compared in Kundli Milan.
- Mars is strong and dignified: in its own signs, Mesha (Aries) or Vrischika (Scorpio), or exalted in Makara (Capricorn).
- Jupiter joins or aspects Mars. The great benefic softens Mars.
- Age. Many astrologers hold that the effect eases after the age of 28.
Because the rules are many and interact, the dosha should be judged on the whole chart, never on the house of Mars alone.
Mangal Dosha in Kundli Milan
When two kundlis are matched, the Ashtakoota guna score (out of 36) is read along with the Manglik status of both charts. When only one partner is Manglik, the charts are examined for cancellations before any conclusion is drawn. Our free Kundli Milan shows the Mangal Dosha status of both charts along with the guna score.
Traditional remedies
If the dosha is present and not cancelled, these remedies are commonly suggested:
- Kumbh Vivah: a symbolic marriage, before the wedding, to a clay pot, a peepal tree or an idol of Lord Vishnu.
- Mangal Shanti puja, and worship of Lord Hanuman, especially on Tuesdays.
- The Mangal mantra: "Om Kram Kreem Kroum Sah Bhaumaya Namah".
- Tuesday fasts, and donating red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery or red cloth.
Gemstones such as red coral are strong remedies and should be worn only after an astrologer has studied the full chart.
