Kaal Sarp Dosha: Meaning, the 12 Types, Effects and Remedies

Kaal Sarp Dosha (also written Kalsarp Dosh) is formed by the two shadow planets, Rahu and Ketu. Like Mangal Dosha, it is widely feared and often overstated. Here is what it actually is.

How it is formed

Rahu and Ketu, the nodes of the Moon, are always exactly opposite each other, so they cut the chart into two halves. When all seven planets from the Sun to Saturn fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, the chart has Kaal Sarp Dosha: the planets are held between the mouth (Rahu) and the tail (Ketu) of the serpent of time, kaal sarp.

If even one planet lies outside the axis, there is no full Kaal Sarp Dosha. Some astrologers call a chart with one planet just outside, or right on a node, a partial (anshik) Kaal Sarp.

Kaal Sarp Dosha is not described in the classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It is a later idea, and astrologers differ on how much weight to give it.

The 12 types

The type is named after the house Rahu occupies, counted from the Lagna:

Rahu in houseKetu in houseType
17Anant
28Kulik
39Vasuki
410Shankhpal
511Padma
612Mahapadma
71Takshak
82Karkotak
93Shankhachud
104Ghatak
115Vishdhar
126Sheshnag

Effects

The dosha is traditionally linked with struggle before success: delays, sudden rises and falls, anxiety, and results that arrive late or after extra effort. The houses of Rahu and Ketu show where this is felt most, for example money and family for Kulik, or home and career for Shankhpal and Ghatak.

Many people with Kaal Sarp Dosha lead very successful lives. Strong benefics, good yogas and favourable dashas can far outweigh it, which is why it has to be read with the full chart.

Traditional remedies

  • Kaal Sarp Dosh puja, best known at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik, and also performed at Ujjain and other Shiva temples.
  • Worship of Lord Shiva and chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra.
  • Observing Nag Panchami and offering milk on a Shivling.
  • Chanting the Rahu and Ketu mantras during their dashas.
